Finding Paragraph 2

While researching facts concerning abuse I found multiple facts that had lead me to think that verbal abuse at one time was worse than physical abuse but it seems as if they both have the same outcome. Both physical and verbal abuse leaves scars that a child must try to overcome and no one completely overcomes being abused. The only difference between the two is that physical abuse leaves scars on the outside where people can see, while verbal abuse does damage on the inside. According to, How are the effects of verbal abuse on children, physical and verbal abuse have a long-term affect on someones life. Abuse can make a child think about suicide or commit suicide; suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15-24 year olds. I found this extremely interesting that some cases of suicide are the result of a child being abused. After researching all the statistics and cases of child abuse it has opened my eyes and has made me understand that just because someone is not putting their hands on someone they are still doing damage. I feel that verbal abuse does has the same outcomes as physical abuse. Both physical and verbal abuse hurt people whether it is their body or their self esteem, and both physical and verbal abuse can kill someone. After this research project I have made a big shift to thinking maybe physical abuse is not just the problem that there are multiple problems with abuse going on.

Finding Paragraph #1

One of my essential questions was which of the states ranked tremendously high for physical child abuse. When researching this question I found that Alaska was ranked the highest out of all however Kentucky follwed them. In Alaska results showed that there was recently 352 cases reported of physical abuse and 72 of them resulted in hospitalization(4 deaths). Of these 352 cases all of them were just infants so imagine how many it would be when you include the people that were not infants. Among the physical abuse to the infants most were 4 months of age. The most common type of abuse seen in hospitalized teens or babies are fractures to the rib, skull, humerus, femur, and the vertabrae. Some cases even included drowning, burning, and suffocation. They were reported to have been abused by their actual parents, babysitters, grandparents, and strangers. In conclusion I think that after knowing that Alaska is the top state along with kentucky that we should us as people report more cases. I think South Carolina may as well be just as high as them if we actually reported the cases.

Wordle #2

Wordle: Untitled

In this wordle I chose the words that stood out the most to me in the article. When reading the article on exactly how much physical abuse has occured and has been reported I was shocked. The word that stood out to me the most was abandoned because this is how the children feel when this happens to them. I used other words such as disorder, suffering, breakdown, massive and many more because these all stand out and I am hoping to express the seriousness of this issue.

Patrick Fagan."Child Abuse Info"(1998-2010)

Chart on physical abuse since the 1980's(percentage)

http://www.a-team.org/child_abuse_statistics.html

This shows the exact percentage of physical child abuse versus other abuses. In 1980 there was exactly 3,100 cases and that rose to 5,700 within the thirteen years. Below the graph it also states that the longer the child continues to be abused the more likely the child is to also be an abuser when he/she is older.

Chart on physical abuse since the 1980's

http://www.a-team.org/child_abuse_statistics.html

This graph shows that physical child abuse has increased 134 percent since the 1980's. In 1980 there was exactly 9,800 abused children reported, and that significantly rose to 23,100 within 13 years. This graph and chart came from the National Incidence Study of Child Abuse and Neglect. This means that it rose 67 percent between those years. The biggest reports show that physical abuse increased the most between those years(102 percent/15 percent per year).

quote #3

"The message a toddler gets from a slap or spanking is that a parent or other loved and trusted adult is prepared to induce pain and even do physical harm to force unquestioning obedience. That's terrifying to a little kid...However well-intentioned, a slap registers as the shattering of the whole deal between parent and child. Young children are left awash in feelings of fear, shame, rage, hostility, self-destructiveness and betrayal that they can't yet resolve or manage."

http://www.religioustolerance.org/spankin4.htm

I chose this quote because it does go with my subject really well and is basically my whole idea. Although I still believe that there is some other way of punishing the child that may be a parents only alternative. When you spank a child they know what they have done wrong but when you hit a child they may not understand why they are recieving this punishment. There is a big difference in getting a spanking and being physically hit. When you get a spanking you are usually hit on the tail and you get the message that you should not do what you did wrong again. When you are physically hit you are thinking what did I do wrong and why is mommy and daddy mad. Hitting a child leaves a fear of what else may come soon so dont hit your child.

Quote #2

"The desire to forget the past is a form of suicide.
I have come to believe that many of us would sooner die than remove our masks and stand barefaced before the world."
-richard bode

I chose this quote because it pertains to my topic so well because its saying that many people would rather hide from every one else and live there life out alone than to tell someone of whats happened to them and then them be judged. I think its saying that maybe the person would rather pretend nothing has never happened rather than facing it and hear how people will judge them. Maybe the people will think differently of them if they actually knew what was going on and so they keep it to themselves and hide behind what has actually went on. When it refers to removing the mask it is saying that they pretend they are this whole different person that they are really not and they do not show who they really are to everyone.

Quote #1

"Massive bruising on the head, and then her little fingers were lacerated, toes," said Detective Lindell Wright who was the first officer on the scene.

http://www.krqe.com/dpp/news/crime/The_short_life_and_brutal_death_of_Baby_Brianna_076886

I got this quote from an news article about a girl that has been abused so much that it leads to death. In the quote it says that she has massive bruising to the head and her fingers and toes were lacerated meaning they were mangled and massively torn. This pertains to my topic because this could give you an image of what really goes on inside a house hold and what kinds of physical abuse really occurs.

Wordle

Wordle: Untitled

In my wordle I chose many words that relate to my topic. My topic is Physical child abuse, and I am looking to help lower it. I used the words I chose to summarize what physical child abuse is. As seen below I used words such as neglect and unjustice because abuse is not necessary to punish the child. I used neglect to relate because the parents are showing neglect by taking frustrations out on their children and beating them.

In this photo there is a stop sign with abuse written on it.It means help stop abuse because there are at least 4 children dieing everyday because of abuse and every 13 seconds a child is being abused. Currently Kentucky has the highest child abuse rate. South Carolina ranks 46th in the nation for child abuse. So stop child abuse now so we may lessen the amount of child abuse.

In this picture there is someone holding a belt and the child is in the corner scared of whats about to happen. This relates to my topic because I believe that if your child does something wrong there is a way you can punish them without beating them.If this was you im sure you wouldnt want to be beaten. Im sure grown ups say children arent beaten nearly as much as they should unlike how they were beaten back when they were growing up. Children before were beaten badly but you shouldnt treat your child the way you were treated because if that was the case then you shouldnt have had a child anyway. People who think they may hurt their child if they have one should reconsider things. Also if you do not have a stable home for the child and food give them to a foster home or other options.

I chose this photo because when you look at some children you can see that something may be wrong in there lives. When you see a child that has been abused they tend to look like they may be scared or in pure fear. Child abuse mentally effects the child. Adults dont take into consideration that physically abusing their child could cause lots of damage. This relates to my topic because it is saying that the kids are in fear and we should not let the parents or anyone else hurt them any longer. In the photo there is a picture of an eye and some text saying cant you see they are scared which means just basically do something about whats going on

Photo and caption

In this photo there is a little boy crying because he is neglected and not shown any attention. Child abuse is a serious issue in the U.S. and more and more cases pop up everyday. In this picture the boy is all alone and only has his teddy bear and I think maybe it means kids that abused think they have no one to turn to and all they have is a stuffed animal for a good memory. This picture relates to my topic because my main topic is about physical child abuse and how we can stop it.

What I would like to know about my topic......

I do not know a lot about my topic overall however I would like to know why so many people can get away with child abuse. I would also like to know why people would turn to child abuse when they are frustrated or angry. Do most parents abuse their child when they are younger or older as in there teenage years? Is child abuse really targeted to all races or is it one main race? Why would someone beat their own child rather than taking it out on someone who is not their family? Is there more cases known in the United States rather than another country? I would like to know how many cases have been reported over the last five years, and how many of them were babies verses teens? Finally, I would like to find out how many cases resulted in death?

What I Already Know About My Topic....

I don’t know a lot about my topic however I know some important things. I know that there are more and more cases being reported everyday. The most targeted are teens and babies because they can not defend themselves like adults. Child abuse is not directed to one race it is all races, black, white, etc. The top three causes of physical abuse are prejudice, shame, and anxiety. Girls and guys are both mistreated but girls are better known for being abused. I know that abuse can be done physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally. I have learned in the past that people who are less fortunate are the ones who are more likely to be abused.

The Story Behind My Topic…

One day my friend Caitlin Housand came into our AVID class and had a debate to work on. I was talking to her and she was researching child abuse cases and this interested me because the amount of adults that abuse children is tremendously high. Then suddenly she came upon a case that was heart wrenching to me because it was so sad. The article was named “The Short Life and Brutal Death of Brianna Lopez.” Even the title was sad and I wanted to know more about the case so I researched it. The story was many pages long and very descriptive and detailed. Long story short, the girls uncle and dad raped and beat her, along with her own mother. The story states that poor Brianna was bruised head to toe. Her uncle and dad were outrageously drunk while Brianna’s mom was said to have been asleep in the next room while all of the horrible things took place but, was later found out to be a lie and in fact her mom had beaten, pinched, and threw her repeatedly. Brianna was threw against the ceiling repeatedly, raped time and time again, had bite marks all the way down her body, skull fractures, etc. the list goes on and on. All the family knew of the abuse that had been taking place and refused to say anything at all. After committing this crime the uncle and dad were only sentenced a maximum of eighteen years to prison at first and after hearing petition after petition was changed. Brianna was beaten so bad that her casket was not able to opened at her viewing. There was never even a picture taken of poor Brianna which meant the only picture they ever had was the one taken at the morgue. This whole case goes on page after page and brings sadness every time I read it. After reading this case many times it has influenced me in changing the amount of child abuse cases reported. I think if I can reach out to some people and talk to people maybe it would help. There are many more cases that were horrible but this one was said to be the worst reported case known in Mexico. Brianna was only five months old when she was killed, and born on Valentines Day. Many people after reading this are in tears and now in place is a bill in her honor. This story is what influenced me to choose this topic. This story can be seen at the site located at the bottom of this page.
